In January 2016 Georgetown launched an Initiative for US-China Dialogue on Global Issues. 

The history of Georgetown University’s engagement with China can be traced back to the late nineteenth century, when Georgetown alumnus Charles Denby (LL.D.'85) served as the United States minister to China from 1885 to 1898. Over the last few decades, partnerships with prestigious Chinese institutions have been established to support faculty and student exchange and research, to engage in high-level dialogues, and to provide training for Chinese officials and executives. On Georgetown’s campus, Chinese nationals form the largest international student and scholar population.

Scholars from across schools and disciplines study the history, culture, and contemporary policy issues related to China, and the Asian Studies Program in the School of Foreign Service is home to a National Resource Center on East Asia. Georgetown study abroad programs in China go beyond language studies to include undergraduate scientific research programs and graduate programs in business, public policy, law, and medicine.

Select Academic Programs

  • M.A. in Asian Studies. This program, housed in the the Asian Studies Program of the Walsh School of Foreign Service, prepares students for professional and academic careers connected with Asia.
  • Major and Minor in Chinese Language Studies. Chinese language programs, offered through the Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures in Georgetown College, combine training in Chinese language and culture.
  • Undergraduate and Graduate Certificates in Asian Studies. The Asian Studies Program offers these certificates for undergraduate and graduate students who complete the necessary language and coursework requirements.

Select Centers, Institutes, and Research Programs

  • Asian Studies Program. This Walsh School of Foreign Service program, designated an East Asia National Resource Center by the U.S. Department of Education in 2010, offers a master's degree and certificate options.
  • Center for Asian Law. This academic unit at Georgetown Law promotes scholarly communication between the Georgetown, the legal community, and colleagues in East Asia.
