Promoting Inquiry around Global Challenges

Georgetown University’s faculty of leading scholars and dedicated teachers pursue multidisciplinary inquiry around global challenges including economic and social development, democracy and human rights, peace and security, and environmental sustainability. Each of these challenges engages the social sciences, humanities, and natural sciences and involves a strong justice dimension—a concern that economic and political globalization should respect human dignity, promote social equality, and benefit the poor. And each recalls the responsibility of the university, as a space of inquiry and reflection, to cultivate knowledge for the betterment of humankind.

Faculty across Georgetown’s Main Campus, Medical Center, and Law Center address pressing global issues through exchanges and research collaboration with colleagues at other institutions around the world. A student-centered research university, Georgetown integrates inquiry and scholarship with teaching at the undergraduate, graduate, and executive and professional levels. Leading scholars across schools and disciplines share their global expertise and passions with students and involve them with international research projects.

In spring 2015, Georgetown launched the Global Futures Initiative to address pressing global issues through teaching, research, and dialogue with world leaders in the public sector, business, and civil society. Over the course four semesters, the initiative is inviting faculty and students to focus on four issues critical for the future of humanity: development, governance, security, and the environment. Global Futures draws on Georgetown’s distinctive character—its strengths across academic disciplines, its Catholic and Jesuit identity, and its presence in Washington, D.C.—to develop the model of an engaged global university in service to the wider world.
