Georgetown University Visiting Professor John Gyapong has held leadership roles at universities and served as a trusted advisor to the government of Ghana, World Health Organization, and World Bank on multiple health issues. In this conversation, Professor Gyapong shared lessons learned from working with institutions of higher education, governments, and multilateral organizations to address health issues, including neglected infectious diseases.

This event was hosted through Georgetown University’s Conversations in Health: Global to Local class, which invites global health professionals to Georgetown’s campus to engage in discussions regarding their career paths and expertise. John Monahan guides the structured conversation, and the discussion is open to all Georgetown University faculty, students, and staff.

John Gyapong is visiting professor at the Department of Global Health at Georgetown University. His main area of research is infectious disease epidemiology, especially lymphatic filariasis, other neglected tropical diseases (NTDs), and malaria. He is the immediate past vice chancellor of the University of Health and Allied Science in Ghana. Prior to this, he was the pro-vice chancellor for research, innovation, and development and professor of epidemiology at the University of Ghana. In addition, Gyapong was the director of research and development of the Ghana Health Services for 12 years and was responsible for health systems and implementation research. He has coordinated several large-scale field intervention studies in Ghana. Gyapong has a Ph.D. in epidemiology from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.

John T. Monahan is a professor in the Department of Medicine, a senior advisor for global health to Georgetown University’s President John J. DeGioia, a senior fellow at the McCourt School of Public Policy, and a senior scholar at the O'Neill Institute for National and Global Health Law at Georgetown Law.
