The Creative Process with Mesma Belsaré

Mesma Belsaré is an Indian classical dancer and LGBTQ activist. As part of LGBTQ History Month and OUTober, she discussed how her social identities have informed her journey in dance and art. Belsaré also reflected on LGBTQ representation and perception in South Asian culture.

Mesma Belsaré is a classical Indian Bharatanatyam dancer, painter, and actor whose work is focused on raising awareness about art in the LGBTQ community. Throughout her professional career, she has travelled around the United States giving talks on LGBTQ representation in Vedic India and gendered movements in Bharatanatyam. She has been awarded the Cambridge Arts Council's Artist-Grant, the New England Foundation of the Arts' Dance Fund, and the Government of Delhi, India scholarship for advanced training in Bharatanatyam and Indian classical music.
