Georgetown and China’s NDRC Sign MOU
On October 23 President John J. DeGioia of Georgetown University and Vice President Wang Changlin of China’s National Development and Reform Commission’s (NDRC) Chinese Academy of Macroeconomic Research signed an MOU to promote academic cooperation and exchange.
“I am excited by the potential of this new academic engagement between Georgetown and China’s most important economic policymaking organization,” said Vice President for Global Engagement Thomas Banchoff. “The United States and China are the world’s two largest economies, and Georgetown has an important role to play in fostering constructive academic dialogue on topics of critical importance to both countries and the global community.”
Vice President Wang was accompanied by NDRC colleagues Yin Wenquan, director of the Institute of Economic System and Management; Liu Xu, deputy director of the Department of Research Planning and Management; Du Feilun, director of the Institute of Economic Research; and Xing Wei of the Institute of Social Development.
After the signing ceremony, NDRC experts shared their insights to an audience of over 50 Georgetown and area students and faculty on “China’s Economic Trajectory: Perspectives from the National Development and Reform Commission.” The event featured a dialogue between the NDRC experts and Professors Arthur Dong of Georgetown University and Margaret Pearson of the University of Maryland.
Panelists were asked about China’s economic policy outlook after the 19th National Party Congress and future trends for Chinese economic development, as well as challenges and opportunities for U.S.-China economic cooperation. Professor Dennis Wilder, managing director of Georgetown’s Initiative for U.S.-China Dialogue on Global Issues, moderated the discussion.
