  • June 10, 2019 - Feminist Humanitarian Policy Launches at Georgetown - GIWPS worked with Madeleine Albright to launch the International Rescue Committee’s feminist humanitarian policy.

  • April 24, 2019 - WGST Annual Student Conference - The Georgetown Women’s and Gender Studies Program hosted their annual student conference featuring keynote speaker Helen Zia.

  • April 4, 2019 - “Mankiller” Film Screening and Discussion - The Women’s and Gender Studies Program, along with Indigenous Studies, and Doyle Engaging Difference, hosted a screening and discussion of “Mankiller,” a documentary on sexism in the Cherokee Nation.

  • April 2, 2019 - Women’s Economic Empowerment in Fragile and Conflict-Affected States: The Role of the Private Sector - GIWPS and the Global Social Enterprise Initiative hosted a discussion on the importance of women’s economic participation in conflict-affected countries.

  • April 2, 2019 - Bridging Theory and Practice: Climate Change, Conflict, and Gender - GIWPS hosted an event co-sponsored by Trinity College in Dublin, where politicians, practitioners, and policymakers discussed the intersection of climate change, conflict, and gender.

  • April 1, 2019 - Women in Politics: #MeToo and What They Mean for 2020 - GU Politics Fellow Dan Sena and Executive Director of EMILY’s list, Emily Cain, had a conversation about the rise of women in government and what that means for future elections.

  • March 26, 2019 - Intersectional Feminism in Congress - Georgetown University’s Women and Gender Studies Program hosted a discussion with Rep. Deb. Haaland (D-NM), one of the first Native American women to be elected to Congress.

  • March 19, 2019 - Personal Finance Workshop for Grad Students and Post Docs - GWA, MCGSO, GUPDA, and the Georgetown Office of Graduate Enrichment presented a workshop with Dr. Emily Roberts of Personal Finance for PhDs. 

  • February 8, 2019 - Prospects for Peace in Yemen - GIWPS hosted Yemen’s first Minister for Human Rights and female cabinet member, Amat Alsoswa, to discuss the possibility of peace in Yemen.

  • February 7, 2019 - Sovereignty Conversation - The Georgetown Gender + Justice Initiative and the Department of Performing Arts co-hosted a conversation between playwright and Georgetown alum Mary Kathryn Nagle and Georgetown Law Professor Naomi Mezey. 

  • February 6, 2019 - Values in U.S. Foreign Policy - GIWPS hosted a Values in U.S. Foreign Policy panel discussion as part of a diplomacy symposium. 

  • February 5, 2019 - Scotland, Brexit, and the Future - GIWPS hosted Nicola Sturgeon, First Minister of Scotland and leader of the Scottish National Party, where she emphasized her call for a second EU membership referendum. 

  • February 2, 2019 - Women’s Leadership in Diplomacy - GIWPS, in collaboration with Women Ambassadors Serving America, hosted 60 of the United States current and former women ambassadors to celebrate women’s leadership in diplomacy.

  • November 9, 2018 - Gender Justice Colloquium - The Gender+ Justice Initiative (GJI) invited faculty from across the University to come together for interdisciplinary conversations on issues of sex, gender, sexuality, feminism, intersectionality, and inequality.

  • October 17, 2018 - Solutions for Syria: A Roundtable Discussion with Syrian Journalists and Civil Society Leaders - GIWPS hosted women journalists and civil society leaders to share their experiences of life under Islamic State and their vision for their country’s future.

  • September 21, 2018 - Overcoming Barriers to Women's Economic Participation: Successful Interventions - GIWPS hosted a conversation on successful interventions to women’s economic participation, with a focus on Central America. 

  • July 12, 2018 - Women’s Informal Involvement in Peace Processes - GIWPS hosted a symposium for top scholars, policy makers and practitioners on women’s informal involvement in peace processes.

  • June 27, 2018 - Strategies to Address Conflict-Related Sexual Violence - The CSIS Smart Women, Smart Power Initiative and GIWPS hosted a roundtable discussion on the topic of conflict-related sexual violence.

  • May 1, 2018 - Discussion on the Future of Women in Violent Extremism - The George Washington University's Program on Extremism and GIWPS hosted a discussion examining the future of women's contribution to violent extremist groups in the United States and abroad.

  • May 1, 2018 - How Targeted U.N. Sanctions Can Address Conflict-Related Sexual Violence - The French Mission to the United Nations and the Georgetown Institute for Women, Peace and Security organized this panel discussion on the use of targeted sanctions to address sexual violence when used as a weapon of war in conflict.

  • April 17, 2018 - Human Rights and the Colombian Peace Process - The Conflict Resolution Program, GIWPS, and the Center for Latin American Studies hosted a conversation with two Colombian women, Ofelia Castillo and Sandra Bermudez, about human rights and the Colombian Peace Process.

  • April 11, 2018 - Gender, Conflict, and Law - Panelists discussed how legal frameworks have been, or should be, used to prevent and address sexual violence, and create more equal post-conflict societies.

  • April 9-10, 2018 - Lannan Symposium 2018: We're In This Thing Together - Georgetown's Women and Gender Studies Program and the Gender Justice Initiative co-sponsored the annual Lannan Center symposium which discussed the current state of affairs in collective organizing and creative endeavors. 

  • March 24, 2018 - CSW62: Empowerment of Rural Women and Girls in Ukraine - GIWPS Executive Director Ambassador Melanne Verveer moderated a discussion about the empowerment of rural women and girls in Ukraine, a side event at the 62nd Session of the Commission on the Status of Women.

  • March 20, 2018 - The Georgetown Women's Alliance co-sponsored a Spring 2018 Diversity and Inclusion event featuring a discussion of Georgetown linguistics professor Deborah Tannen's most recent book You’re The Only One I Can Tell: Inside the Language of Women’s Friendships.

  • March 20, 2018 - The Future of Democracy in Africa with Ellen Johnson Sirleaf - This conversation with Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, former President of Liberia, was organized by the Global Human Development Program  and co-sponsored by the Georgetown Institute for Women, Peace and Security.

  • March 12, 2018 - The Georgetown Institute for Women, Peace and Security co-hosted the U.S. premiere of the documentary film Wave Goodbye to Dinosaurs at the British Embassy. On the 20th anniversary of Northern Ireland’s Good Friday Agreement, the film tells the extraordinary story of the Northern Ireland Women’s Coalition. A panel discussion followed.

  • February 28, 2018 - Engaging Men to Invest in Gender Equality and Advance Global Development - SAIS International Development Program and the Georgetown Institute for Women, Peace, and Security co-hosted a roundtable with Dr. Gary Barker, President and CEO of Promundo, a global leader in promoting gender justice and preventing violence.

  • February 26, 2018 - Inclusive Disaster Risk Reduction: Women and Climate Change Adaptation - The Georgetown Institute for Women, Peace and Security hosted Dr. Minerva Pinelo, project director for the Pan American Development Foundation, to discuss building resilience to natural disasters and encouraging preparedness and adaptation. 

  • February 5, 2018 - Former U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton spoke at the annual Hillary Rodham Clinton Awards for Advancing Women in Peace and Security ceremony, hosted by the Georgetown Institute for Women, Peace and Security (GIWPS).

  • January 26-28, 2018 - At Hoya Hacks, the university hackathon, Georgetown’s chapter of U.N. Women’s HeforShe campaign, sponsored a gender equality track, inviting students to design prototypes for projects tackling the problem of gender-based violence.

  • January 18, 2018 - Women ambassadors, Congresswomen, and other leading ladies in foreign policy celebrated sisterhood and solidarity at an annual dinner organized by Georgetown’s Institute for Women Peace and Security. The event was co-hosted by Secretary Madeleine Albright, Ambassador Melanne Verveer, and Georgetown University President John J. DeGioia.

  • November 2, 2017 - Empowering Women at the Local, National, and International Level: A Conversation with Irish Senator Alice-Mary Higgins - In a conversation moderated by CC Borzilleri (COL '19) of the Georgetown Women's Alliance, Alice-Mary discussed the issues she’s addressed as a Senator, in particular her engagement on women’s political and policy issues.

  • October 13, 2017 - Gender Justice Initiative Fall 2017 Colloquium - Georgetown's Gender Justice Initiative hosted a colloquium featuring faculty panels on intersectional gender justice. 

  • June 27, 2017 - A panel discussion, "Cultivating Confidence: A Global Perspective," was presented by Tupperware Brands and Georgetown University, two of U.N. Women's HeForShe Impact Champions.

  • May 2, 2017 - A lecture and book signing with Deborah Tannen, Professor, Department of Linguistics, Georgetown University - Professor Tannen discussed her new book You’re The Only One I Can Tell: Inside the Language of Women’s Friendships

  • April 2017 was Sexual Assault Awareness Month - HoyasForShe, the Georgetown student movement inspired by HeForShe, partnered with the Women's Center to promote Take Back the Night Week and Denim Day

  • April 19, 2017 - IDEAA hosted a program on Combating Sexual Violence featuring the work of the University's Task Force on Sexual Misconduct

  • April 22, 2017 -  John Carroll Weekend included a panel on "Advancing Gender Equity: Empowering the Next Generation of Women Leaders." House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi offered introductory remarks and Ambassador Melanne Verveer moderated a panel discussion.

  • April 24, 2017 - The Georgetown University Women’s Center and the Georgetown Women’s Alliance hosted a conversation and book signing with Nancy Weiss Malkiel, Ph.D., author of Keep the Damned Women Out: The Struggle for Coeducation and Professor Emeritus of History at Princeton University. Dr. Malkiel was in conversation with Carol Benedict, Ph.D., Professor of History at Walsh School of Foreign Service.

  • March 31, 2017 - The Georgetown Institute for Women, Peace and Security presented the 2017 Hillary Rodham Clinton Awards For Advancing Women in Peace and Security in recognition of the achievement of the Colombian Peace Agreement to Humberto De la Calle, Maria Paulina Riveros, Elena Ambrosi, and Jineth Bedoya. The Hon. Hillary Rodham Clinton, Honorary Founding Chair of the Georgetown Institute for Women, Peace and Security, offered introductory remarks.

  • March 30, 2017 - HoyasForShe, the Georgetown's student movement inspired by HeForShe, hosted its kickoff event, discussing the year ahead and opportunities to get involved.
     
  • March 15, 2017 - In support of HeForShe Arts Week, HoyasForShe, the Georgetown's student movement inspired by HeForShe, and GUerrilla hosted an Improv open practice and workshop exploring comedy and gender. 
     
  • February 15, 2017 - HoyasForShe, the Georgetown's student movement inspired by HeForShe, sponsored a special screening of The Hunting Ground, a documentary film about sexual assault on U.S. college campuses.
     
  • December 6, 2016 - At the "Men, Listen Up" event, a panel of female students discussed the experiences of and obstacles faced by female student leaders in our community.  The event was sponsored by Georgetown HeForShe and GUSA.
     
  • November 4 to 6, 2016 - HoyasForShe, the Georgetown's student movement inspired by HeForShe, sponsored a gender track at the Georgetown University Hackathon. Students formed teams to address a challenge related to advancing gender equality on campus and develop a creative plan/prototype to address the challenge.
