Georgetown University Leaders Tour Shanghai, Hong Kong, and Seoul
In May 2024, McDonough School of Business Dean Paul Almeida and Vice President for Global Engagement Thomas Banchoff traveled to the Asia-Pacific region to connect with alumni and international partners. During the first leg of the trip, Vice President Banchoff visited Fudan University and met with the alumni community in Shanghai. He then traveled to Hong Kong, where he was joined by Dean Almeida. The two leaders concluded their tour in Seoul.
While in Hong Kong, Banchoff and Almeida’s visit coincided with a week-long study tour and dialogue program, sponsored by Georgetown University’s Initiative for U.S.-China Dialogue on Global Issues. The program brought together students from Georgetown University, Fudan University, Beijing University, and the University of California, San Diego. Banchoff emphasized the need for programs that promote dialogue among students on critical issues in the U.S.-China relationship.
"At a time of tension in U.S.-China relations, student-to-student dialogue is more important than ever."
The visit to Hong Kong was the fourth university leadership trip to the city since spring 2023, underscoring its importance for outreach in Asia. At the historic China Club, Almeida spoke with alumni, parents, and friends about the McDonough School of Business' global activities and discussed the school's Global Knowledge Network that aims to connect leading researchers around the globe through faculty exchange programs. Highlights of the event also included insights from delegates of the study tour and the launch of a mentorship program by the Georgetown Club of Hong Kong. Dennis Wilder, a leading China expert in the Walsh School of Foreign Service, and Renée Gallant, the Georgetown University representative in Asia, also attended the reception.
At the conclusion of their tour Banchoff and Almeida traveled to South Korea, where they attended an event for members of the Georgetown community, including alumni and parents. Leaders of the Georgetown Club of Seoul shared a presentation showcasing the diverse range of events the club has hosted over the past year.
Banchoff and Almeida also met with representatives of Seoul National University to discuss faculty exchange opportunities between the McDonough School of Business and the Business School at Seoul National University. Dennis Quinn, the John J. Powers, Jr. Professor of International Business at the McDonough School of Business, also participated in the meeting.
Reflecting on the Asia-Pacific tour, Almeida emphasized the McDonough School of Business’ global ambitions and interest in forging relationships across the world to build experiences and broaden mindsets.
"By connecting with our alumni and seeking new partnerships throughout the Asia-Pacific region, we will provide new opportunities for learning and growth for our students and our research."
