Carol Benedict is the Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Chair in the School of Foreign Service and the Department of History. A member of the faculty committee for the Initiative for U.S.-China Dialogue on Global Issues, she joined the Georgetown faculty in 1995.
International activities include
- Authored two books Bubonic Plague in Nineteenth-Century China and Golden-Silk Smoke: A History of Tobacco in China, 1550-2010.
- Awarded the American Historical Association's 2011 John K. Fairbank Prize in East Asian History for Golden-Silk Smoke. The book was also a finalist for the 2013 Southeast Conference of the Association for Asian Studies book prize.
- Received the Dean's Award for Excellence in teaching in the College in 2005 and completed a residential fellowship at the Woodrow Wilson Center for International Scholars.
