Georgetown Leaders Tour Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Japan

During November 2025, Interim President Robert M. Groves and Vice President for Global Engagement Thomas Banchoff traveled to Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Japan to engage with alumni, parents, and international partners. At the conclusion of their tour in Japan, the leaders were joined by Dean of the School of Foreign Service Joel Hellman and Interim Dean of Georgetown Law Joshua Teitelbaum for Georgetown’s 2025 International Alumni Summit in Tokyo.

Hong Kong

Groves and Banchoff began their Asia-Pacific tour in Hong Kong, the seventh university leadership trip to the city since spring 2023. With over 220 Georgetown alumni living and working in Hong Kong, the Alumni Club of Hong Kong is very active. Recently, the Alumni Club of Hong Kong won the Georgetown University Alumni Association’s 2025 Educational Program of the Year award for their “Macau’s Economic Development: From Tourism to Technology” event.

Taiwan

Groves and Banchoff then traveled to Taiwan, where Georgetown currently has more than 230 alumni living and working. They connected with the vibrant alumni community and also met with representatives from Fu Jen University and National Taiwan University. Fu Jen University, a Catholic and Jesuit university, has a history of engaging with Biomedical Graduate Education in Georgetown’s School of Medicine on educational activities. Banchoff emphasized the importance of maintaining and expanding upon Georgetown’s collaborations with international partners.

“Providing opportunities for our students and faculty to collaborate on global challenges with peers in other countries strengthens our teaching and research mission while serving the global common good.”

Japan

The final destination of their Asia-Pacific tour was Japan, where Groves and Banchoff were joined by Dean of the School of Foreign Service Joel Hellman, Interim Dean of Georgetown Law Joshua Teitelbaum, and Georgetown alumni from around the world for Georgetown’s 2025 International Alumni Summit. Georgetown currently has more than 13,000 alumni living and working internationally, as well as 789 alumni in Japan.

The summit, which takes place annually in locations around the world, is an opportunity to gather Georgetown’s international community for events and conversations. The 2025 summit in Tokyo included thought-provoking conversations about the United States, Asia, and the world, as well as a fireside chat between Groves and prominent Georgetown alumnus Kono Taro (SFS’86), former foreign minister of Japan.
