HeForShe is a solidarity campaign for the advancement of gender equality, initiated by the UN. The goal of the movement is to achieve equality by encouraging men and boys—and people of all genders—to partake as agents of change and take action in the fight for gender equality.
The three-day meeting consisted of presentations from members of several HeForShe IMPACT Champion institutions, statements from leadership of UN Women, and roundtable discussions on future plans for the movement. University and corporate participants also engaged in a “speed networking” session, during which they explored shared priorities and opportunities for collaboration. Participants also heard from current Georgetown students about their experience with the HoyasForShe Student Fellowship Program.
Georgetown has participated as a founding university IMPACT Champion in the HeForShe Campaign since 2016, engaging with the UN Women movement through academic and professional partnerships, conferences, workshops, and student fellowships. President DeGioia has made three commitments in support of the HeForShe mission: to advance the role of women globally; to make Georgetown a respectful, safe campus for all; and to create a culture where women thrive.
In addition to Georgetown's institutional commitments, the university sponsors a student fellows program, which pairs students with organizations on campus working toward gender equity, and a HoyasForShe Student Fund, which supports gender-related projects and events on campus.
Much of Georgetown’s support for this work is manifested by the Georgetown Women’s Alliance; the Georgetown Institute for Women, Peace and Security; the Gender+ Justice Initiative; the Office of Institutional Diversity, Equity and Affirmative Action; Health Education Services; and the Women’s and Gender Studies Program.
The IMPACT Lab convened university and corporate champion representatives October 21 to 23 at Georgetown University in Washington, DC. Learn more about HeForShe at Georgetown.
