Four members of the School of Nursing & Health Studies faculty traveled to Liberia to explore the health care and educational needs of the area through a five-day workshop “Caring for Mothers and Babies and Healthcare Workers.”
Deb Dole, Julia Lange Kessler, Rosie Sokas, and Cindy Farley, traveled to Liberia with the support of an International Collaborative Grant, a Global Engagement Faculty Grant that supports joint conferences, workshops, or seminars involving at least two Georgetown faculty and one foreign collaborator.
The five-day program for midwives, nurses, and students included workshops on health care worker safety and health, as well as the continuation of education for midwives. The Georgetown faculty evaluated existing health needs in the local area through meetings with Catholic Health Secretariat, National Public Health Institute of Liberia, and Board of Nursing and Midwifery members.
An additional element of the trip was to explore the ways in which Georgetown midwifery and occupational health faculty can support the regeneration of the Liberian midwifery workforce devastated by the 2014-2016 Ebola epidemic and by 14 years of civil war.
This project not only aligned with the objectives of the Liberian Midwives Association to “strengthen the midwifery profession in Liberia and promote the well-being of mothers and their newborns,” but also the Ignatian principle of care for the whole person in recognizing individual needs of care providers as well as the patients they serve.
The partnership between the NHS and the Liberian health care community exemplifies Georgetown’s continued commitment to collaborating with local communities around the world to improve the practices and lives of stakeholders at every level.
The five-day workshop took place in Caldwell, Liberia, from November 2 to 7, 2018.
