Jonathan Brown is an associate professor in the Center for Contemporary Arab Studies in the School of Foreign Service and the Department of Arabic and Islamic Studies in the College. He is also the Prince Alwaleed bin Talal Chair of Islamic Civilization and the director of the Prince Alwaleed bin Talal Center for Muslim-Christian Understanding. He joined the Georgetown faculty in 2010.
International activities include:
- Author of four books and numerous articles in the fields of Hadith, Islamic law, Sufism, Arabic lexical theory and pre-Islamic poetry, and editor-in-chief of the Oxford Encyclopedia of Islam and Law
- Term member of the Council on Foreign Relations
- Has studied and conducted research in Egypt, Syria, Turkey, Morocco, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Indonesia, India, and Iran
