Georgetown University has had a long history of engaging with South and Central Asia and has increased its activities, particularly in relation to India, in the last 15 years.

In 2011, Georgetown hosted the first U.S.-India Higher Education Summit, and the Asian Studies Program was founded in the School of Foreign Service that same year. From 2015 to 2020, the Georgetown University India Initiative promoted greater opportunities for educational experiences, research collaboration, cultural exchange, and international dialogue. Today, Georgetown scholars are exploring multidisciplinary issues related to South and Central Asia, and students are taking advantage of study abroad programs in countries such as India, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan. Undergraduate and graduate students in global health programs are also completing field-based research in countries including India and Bangladesh. The Asian Studies Program at the School of Foreign Service continues to be a major hub for engagement with the region and offers an undergraduate certificate in South Asian Studies.
