Georgetown University’s long and significant history with Latin America goes back to the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries and the emergence of a network of Jesuit colleges and universities across the hemisphere.

The founding of the School of Foreign Service in 1919 multiplied faculty and student contacts with the region. In 1920, for example, a student group traveled to Venezuela to study trade and economics at the University of Caracas. In 1923, the Pan American Students Association was inaugurated to encourage interaction among students from the hemisphere studying on campus. In 1959, the Center for Latin American Studies was established within the School of Foreign Service, one of the first programs of its kind in the United States. Other hubs for engagement with the region include the Latin America Leadership Program in the McDonough School of Business and the Center for the Advancement of the Rule of Law in the Americas at the Georgetown Law Center. The Georgetown Americas Institute was founded in 2020 as a university-wide platform for dialogue, research, and impact around hemispheric challenges.
